Du Boisâs experiences of exclusion as a child and an adult11 led him to stress the need for a separate Black social development, âa form of biculturalism within âone Nationâââ (1897; Thomson, 2010, p. 283).
In 1903, in his seminal essay The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois famously wrote that âthe problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color lineâ (1965 ed, p. 221). Yet the âproblem of the color lineâ for Du Bois was not just confined to ânine millions [sic] Americans and settled when their rights and opportunities are assuredâ, for âa glance over the world at the dawn of the new century will convince us that this is but the beginning of the problem â that the color-line belts the world and the social problem of the twentieth century is to be the relation of the civilized world to the dark races of mankindâ (2014 ed, pp. 111â112). While each racial groupâs experience will have historically specific characteristics, Du Bois pointed out that the âcolor-lineâ manifested itself in numerous ways across the world, whether between âthe brown Turanians of Indiaâ and their âyellow conquerorsâ (ibid, p. 113) or the âmost curious and complicated race conflict between Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Jews, and Polesâ (Du Bois ibid, p. 119). Thus, the âproblem of the color lineâ can also be seen as relating to the situation of the Southern Italians (as discussed in Chapter 3), the anti-Semitism of Durkheimâs France and the subsequent rise of Nazi Germany.12 The implications of the âcolor lineâ were clearly articulated throughout Du Boisâs many writings. In terms of the contemporary relevance of the âcolor-lineâ in the United States, Vann R. Newkirk II noted in the new introduction to the 2017 edition of The Souls of Black Folk that âfrom Barack Obamaâs presidency to the rise of Black Lives Matter to Donald Trumpâs election amid a furor over voting rights, white nationalism, and racism, the color line is still the countryâs core subjectâ.
